Dual Enrollment

The dual enrollment program allows academically eligible Northwood High School seniors to take courses at the University of Maryland. A summer orientation course is taught on the UM campus as a prerequisite for dual enrollment. Mentors and peer buddies are recruited to work with each NHS student. Additionally, students receive support at NHS through a class specifically designed to give them the skills needed to succeed in both high school and college courses. Sixteen NHS students successfully completed one UM course each in the fall of 2007, and ten in spring, 2008. Thirty-six students have applied to the dual enrollment program for the Fall 2008 semester. The Maryland state legislature and Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley passed and signed a bill into law that will provide scholarship funding for students who are enrolled in high school and taking courses at local universities.  Unfortunately, to date this remains an unfunded mandate.  Some scholarship funds are available for those in need, however.

Wheaton Community Survey Project

Since 2004, NHS students have conducted a community asset survey of a select area in the nearby community of Wheaton, MD. Alex Chen, a Professor of Urban Studies and Planning at UM, leads this collaborative project. The goal is for Northwood students to complete a five-year study of the physical environment and the citizens of Wheaton. Students collect information about the streets and sidewalks, stores and services, and buildings and land uses in the community. They interview residents, business owners, and social service providers to determine strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the community. This project enhances students' awareness of their community by introducing them to community survey and analysis techniques using recent advances in PDA technology and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technology.
